SacC MUN Bulletin #4: Leadership Application Deadlines and Important Stuff for Next Week

Parents, please make sure to share this week's bulletin with your Ambassadors and encourage them to read the information. There is a leadership application deadline on Friday at 8pm and we would LOVE to see some Sacramento Central Ambassadors try out for some special roles! Parents, please encourage your Ambassadors to stretch beyond their usual comfort zones and set some big goals for the year!

1.) And the Country Is . . . .  Mozambique! At our meeting this week, we learned that we will represent the Country of Mozambique in the Model United Nations. Now it is time to learn about the country. We reviewed a Country Profile and divided up the parts of the profile to research between now and the next meeting. Here is an example of country profiles. The Ambassadors who attended this week will bring their information to the next meeting. Next week, absent Ambassadors will draw their assignments.

2.) Delegation Motto: This week - hopefully with everyone there - we are going to choose our delegation's motto for the year.  It's a very important task! This motto will be a statement of what we think is important to making the world a better place. We started the process at the last meeting and hope to have all Ambassadors there next week to finish up this project.

3.) Program Areas:
This week at our meeting you will rank your Program Area choices. To prepare, please read these brief descriptions of the program areas with the number of spots we have in each:
  • General Assembly (1 spot): In GA, you will work in a committee to create a resolution that sets values for the international community. Once you create your resolution with your committee, the resolution will be debated in the entire General Assembly and either be adopted or not.
  • Economic and Social Council (1 spot): In ECOSOC, similar to GA, you will work in a committee to create a resolution about economic (business and money) or social (how people live and interact) ideas. The resolution will be debated in the larger ECOSOC and will either be adopted or not.
  • Non-Governmental Organization (3 spots): In NGO, you work with a small group to create a program idea meant to address some of the world's biggest problems. You will present your idea with your group at the NGO Fair (think of it like a science fair) to determine which project gets funded (with imaginary money). For example, you might come up with an idea to install large water tanks to catch rain in areas where people lack drinking water.
  • International Court of Justice (1 spot): The ICJ is a court of law that investigates disagreements between countries. You can serve as a lawyer or a judge in this program area. You will get to learn the facts of a case and come up with arguments if you are a lawyer or decide which side is right if you are a judge.
  • International Press Corps (1 spot): In IPC you will cover stories about what is happening at the Summit like you would for your school newspaper. You will learn how to ask questions and how to write a news story.
At our training conference in March, you will learn all about your program area and how to do the jobs in that program area. You may not be in the same program area with people from our delegation, but you will get a chance to meet new people in March who you will see again in your program area in April in Los Angeles!

4.) Apply for A Leadership Role! Applications Due by Friday at 8pm

MUN is all about trying new things! We may be a new delegation and you may be new Ambassadors, but why not take a chance on applying for a leadership role in MUN? We strive to have someone apply for a leadership position and someone run for an elected position each year.

You apply through your REGGO registration account that you set up to register for our conferences. Here is a visual aid to help you find the applications. And here are descriptions of the available leadership positions.
  • In ECOSOC (see description of this program area above)
    • Elected: ECOSOC President (7th or 8th grade) - represent ECOSOC in program-wide proceedings. Use parliamentary procedure (remember when we made trail mix?) to preside over sessions. Make sure everyone gets a chance to speak and share an opinion.
    • Elected: ECOSOC Vice President (7th or 8th grade)- Work with the president or preside over sessions if the president isn't there.
    • Appointed: ECOSOC Committee (All Grades!) - Use parliamentary procedure to be in charge of small group of delegates while they debate resolutions.
  • In GA (see description of program area above)
    • Elected: GA President (7th or 8th grade) - same as the ECOSCO president, above.
    • Elected: GA Vice President (7th or 8th grade) - same as the ECOSOC vice president, above.
    • Appointed: GA Committee Chair (All Grades!) - Same as ECOSOC committees, above.
  • In NGOs (see description of program area above)
    • Elected: Agency Members (All Grades!): Instead of creating the NGO proposals with a small group, you would be in the "Agency" that decides whether to approve NGO proposals. You would suggest to the Secretary General what ideas should get funding.
    • Appointed: Directors (All Grades!): Like a committee chair, you use parliamentary procedure to guide discussions about proposals.
    • Appointed: Under-Secretary-General (All Grades!): You would be in charge of an agency and will be responsible for making the final funding requests to the full United Nations.
  • In ICJ (see description of program area above)
    • Elected: President (7th or 8th Grade): Represent the Court in full Summit proceedings.
    • Elected: Vice President (7th or 8th Grade): Represent the Court if the president isn't there.
  • In IPC (see description of program area above)
    • Elected: Editor-In-Chief (7th or 8th grade): Coordinate the daily business of the Press Corps. Work to develop look of the IPC publications. Work with Bureau Chiefs to determine what stories are newsworthy and how to report on them.
    • Appointed: Bureau Chief (All Grades!): Ensure that assigned program areas are properly covered by the press. Help reporters.
Applications to run or apply for leadership positions are due on Friday March 1 by 8pm.  Make sure to email Amanda and Christiana when you are finished with your application!

Y&G CapCo Bulletin Special: Banquet This Week!

Thank you for purchasing tickets to attend this week's Third Annual Capitol Coalition Celebration Banquet at the Old Spaghetti Factory in Rancho Cordova at 6:00pm. We're looking forward to a wonderful evening celebrating our wonderful delegates' accomplishments this year.

We are also very excited to announce that we will be welcoming Secretary of State Alex Padilla who will administer the Oath of Office to our incoming CapCo officer teams!

Please take note of these important details for Wednesday:
  • The Banquet starts at 6:00pm. Please be on-time as we are a large group and check-in will require some patience. Seating is first come first serve, with the exception of reserved seating for our honored guests and Officers/those with speaking roles in the program. (Officers and Presenting delegates, please watch your inbox for a separate confirmation email of your party size.)
  • Secretary Padilla has rearranged his schedule to attend so we are rearranging our format slightly to accommodate his schedule. Our program will begin promptly at 6:30 with an Invocation, his remarks, and the swearing-in ceremony. Then dinner will be served, and we'll resume our program shortly after.
  • Delegates are expected to attend in Sac Attire (business attire).
  • As mentioned in previous emails, the restaurant has gone out of its way to accommodate all who wanted to attend. There will be some seating areas that do not have a clear view of the presentations. We will welcome those seated at those tables to come into the main area for a better view during presentations. We appreciate your patience and flexibility this year. (We think record attendance is a great problem to have!)
  • Old Spaghetti Factory Rancho Cordova is located at 12401 Folsom Blvd, Rancho Cordova, CA 95742 (just off Hwy 50 at Hazel)
This email is going only to delegates and delegate families. If you have guests attending who would not be on our normal email distribution list, please pass this information along to them (especially the start time!)

A special thank you to Old Spaghetti Factory for again providing complimentary beverages (iced tea, soda, coffee, tea) for our event. We appreciate their support!

We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday!

SacC MUN Bulletin #3: Which Country Will It Be?

Parents, please make sure to share this week's bulletin with your Ambassadors and encourage them to read the information. This week we will reveal our assigned country! I wonder what it will be . . . .

1.) Sweatshirt Design Ideas Due This Week! Last week we learned that our sweatshirt color this year is Royal Blue. Here is an explanation of what MUN sweatshirts usually look like. Bring your design ideas this week! They must be written down or drawn out (by hand or using a computer) if you want them considered.

2.) Delegation Motto: This week we are going to choose our delegation's motto for the year.  It's a very important meeting! This motto will be a statement of what we think is important to making the world a better place. Another word for that is "values." We'll discuss what values we want to show to others at conferences. You can prepare for our meeting by thinking about the YMCA's values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility. What does it look like when we care for other people? What does it look like when we don't?

3.) Program Areas:
It's time to start thinking about what program area you would like to be in! In each program area, you'll be pretending to be from our assigned country - which will be revealed this week! - so you will propose solutions to problems that face the people in our assigned country and look for other countries who might have the same problems and might want to work with you on solutions.

Here are brief descriptions of the program areas with the number of spots we have in each:

  • General Assembly (1 spot): In GA, you will work in a committee to create a resolution that sets values for the international community. Once you create your resolution with your committee, the resolution will be debated in the entire General Assembly and either be adopted or not.
  • Economic and Social Council (1 spot): In ECOSOC, similar to GA, you will work in a committee to create a resolution about economic (business and money) or social (how people live and interact) ideas. The resolution will be debated in the larger ECOSOC and will either be adopted or not.

MUN is all about trying new things! We may be a new delegation and you may be new Ambassadors, but why not take a chance on applying for a leadership role in MUN? We strive to have someone apply for a leadership position and someone run for an elected position each year.

    • Appointed: Bureau Chief (All Grades!): Ensure that assigned program areas are properly covered by the press. Help reporters.
If you have questions about any of these, bring them with you to the meeting. Applications to run or apply for leadership positions are due on March 1. We'll show you how to apply at the next meeting.

Parent Corner:

Conference Transportation Update: Thank you to all who completed our survey. I think our plan is starting to come together! Please note that this year is unique since it's our first year. Normally, participants are required to travel with the delegation. This is my way of saying that next year's plans may work differently, but we're goin' with it this year as we learn together! Please watch for separate emails from Christiana confirming travel plans!

Thank you!

5.) VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: Let's get a jump on next year by continuing our tradition of community service, here are two upcoming volunteer opportunities:

The Seize The Moment Run raises funds to support the Epilepsy Foundation of Northern California (www.epilepsynorcal.org) provides programs and services to the 180,000 people in Northern California living with Epilepsy. You can join Team Tommy and run/walk the 5k or run the 10k, donate, or volunteer to help on race day
    • If you sign up to run or to volunteer, make sure to let me know so we have it in our delegation notes for next year!

  • Gold Country Half Marathon, El Dorado Hills: Because we've done such a great job running CIM Aid Stations, the Sacramento Running Association has asked us to run two aid stations at the Gold Country Half Marathon on Sunday, May 19 in El Dorado Hills. You'll be assigned to one of two aid stations after we receive the locations from the SRA - but both are in El Dorado Hills and very close to each other! Sign up here

If you apply for special programs, make sure that you read your email regularly between now and the conference and review the conference schedule when it is released next week to check for interview times and locations or other requirements.

Parent Corner

Communication is Key! There will be additional information emailed between now and the conference. Please remind your delegate to check their email, Groupme, and Remind texts frequently (read: daily) between now and the conference. If your delegate will not have a cell phone at conference or if you need to update their number, please email me ASAP so I know.

Conference Transportation: Because we're the home team, delegates are responsible for their own transportation to and from downtown Sacramento for the conference. Delegates may not, under any circumstances, drive themselves to or from the conference. It is a violation of the CalYMCA Code of Conduct and delegates found to have driven themselves to conference will be sent home.

- Sac Conference Meals: Unlike our first two conferences, our final conference includes only 2 provided meals (Friday and Sunday night dinners). Delegates are responsible for all other meals. We generally recommend a budget of $100 per delegate, depending on their appetite. Delegates are highly encouraged to bring non-perishable breakfast items (instant oatmeal, fruit, granola bars) to save on costs and time in the morning. If the meal budget for the conference presents a financial hardship, contact me ASAP. No one will be allowed to go hungry during the conference

- Sac Conference Attendance: Sac Conference is Feb 14-18 and constitutes an excused absence from school under the Education Code. I wanted to take this opportunity to remind you again that regular season sports or other regular, predictable, or recurring events (like homework or tests) do not constitute valid excuses for missing any part of Sac Conference. Exceptions will only be granted on a case-by-case basis for special circumstances (like state championships, meetings with the pope or president, that sort of thing).

It may seem like no big deal to pop out for a couple of hours, but your advisors are responsible for knowing the whereabouts of 140 people at all times and tracking delegate location when every one is at conference is tricky enough. Y&G is also preparing delegates for real life in that, in life, sometimes you have to make tough choices about what activities to prioritize.

We thank you for respecting this policy and helping us ensure a safe and positive experience for all delegates.

As always, thank you for reading and I will see you in Sacramento!
