Payment Deadline:
September 14 is a $300 payment deadline. Please bring a check payable to "Sacramento Central YMCA" with your name in the memo line or make a payment online at www.ymcasuperiorcal.org/y&gpayment

If you submitted a completed Y-Assist application, no payment is due at this time. You will be notified of any Y-Assist award and a new payment deadline.

Bill Hearing Night date change:
Our bill hearing night has been moved to Wednesday, November 2. Please make a note - this is a fun (and mandatory) event!

Capitol Coalition Field Day RSVP:
Baby Bob's latest incarnation (if you're new, don't worry, we'll explain at the next meeting. Join us on October 2 for a day at the park with delegates from the El Dorado and Sacramento Central delegations. Location is TBD, but it will take place in El Dorado Hills this year, Sunday, October 2, from 10am to 4pm.

You're receiving this bulletin as a member or parent of the Capitol Coalition of Y&G Delegations - Sacramento Central and El Dorado. This week, we'll experiment with a Coalition-wide bulletin. There are three sections: one for El Dorado (meets at Oak Ridge High School on Thursdays), one for Sacramento Central (meets at 5959 8th Avenue on Wednesdays), and one section for the entire coalition. The YMCA Youth & Government Model Legislature and Court Program - or Y&G for short - offers hands-on leadership training for California High School Students in grades 9-12. 

Throughout California, over 3400 students meet in local YMCA delegations weekly to learn about state government, author their own legislation, develop leadership skills, and build their self-confidence by honing their public speaking and presentation skills while preparing for an experience unlike any other. 

In high school civics you learn about the basics of government, but do you know how your state really works? Are you ready to lead? Can you turn an idea into a law? Through Y&G, you’ll learn how government works – not just what government does.

After two training conferences, you’ll take over the State Capitol, the Superior Court, run a newspaper , or do the jobs of our elected officials, lawyers, judges, and journalists.

You cannot learn this from a book.

Our delegates might not all run for office someday, but if they wanted to, they would know how. What do our delegates do? They care. They engage in their communities every day. They show up. They vote. They get ready today for the leadership challenges of tomorrow.

What Should I Bring To the First Meeting?
Great question - glad you asked. Here's what all prepared delegates should have with them on Wednesday, August 31:
- Paper/Notebook and a pen
- Planner, calendar, or their e-calendar
- Y-Assist Application (if applicable)
- $100 Program Fee Deposit check (if you haven't paid online yet) made out to "Sacramento Central YMCA" with your name and "Y&G" in the memo line.
- All the friends you want to participate in this year's program with you!

For our prospective new delegates:
Not sure what this is all about? Please come to our first meeting! Hear from current delegates about the great opportunities Y&G offers and why they joined - and why they keep coming back. If the program fees have got you down, don't worry! We fundraise a ton and there is a lot financial support available. Don't let cost keep you away from our meetings. We want you to join us. So bring your questions, worries, and concerns and let us put them all to rest. Y&G is amazing and we think you'll like it, too.

Registration, Program Deposit, and Financial Aid:
We are again using an online registration system this year. We are also offering an option to make program payments online this year. We hope this makes program payments more convenient for our families.


Financial aid is available to those who qualify through both the YMCA of Superior California as well as YMCA Youth & Government and we will, as always, make available additional fundraising opportunities. I encourage anyone with financial concerns to contact me or Dylan as soon as possible – we are happy to work with you on a plan that makes program participation possible. If you are interested in financial assistance or the program fee presents a hardship, simply indicate that when asked on the registration form. Y&G69 Pre-Program Bulletin #1: Welcome to the 69th Model Legislature & Court

We're excited to announce the start of this year's program. If you're ready to learn how to turn your thoughts into actions and your actions into meaningful change in your community, we're ready to welcome you to our delegation. If you're ready to make 3400 new friends, travel, try new things, conquer some fears, then we're ready to help you accomplish all of that an more. If you're ready to have so much fun you won't even notice how much fancier your college application is about to look, then come on down!

Please join me in welcoming Dylan O’Tarrow, the YMCA’s new Y&G program coordinator. Dylan replaces Samia Abbass who has moved to the East Coast to pursue her education. YG68: Delegation Bulletin #18: So Many Google Forms, So Little Time Required

You did it! Most of our delegation walked into the Y or the Community Center in September, sat down, had no idea what they were in for, and dove in anyway. Last weekend was the payoff for that leap of faith. The advisors saw something momentous from every, single delegate during Sac Conference. Your growth from last fall to now was obvious and we are so, so proud to have been with you on this journey. And now, on to the celebration!

Well, we made it! This Thursday will see the start of an exciting, exhausting, amazing experience. You'll finally put to work your training from the first two conferences. You'll dress the part. You'll walk the walk. You'll talk the talk. These 5 days are going to be what you make of them - so go big or go home with regret over what could've been. Raise your hand, share that viewpoint, speak with confidence, own the room. Your advisor team is so proud of all you've done so far this year and we know you're going to do GREAT at Sac Conference!

UPDATED ARRIVAL INFORMATION. Please see the attached REVISED parent info letter and arrival day information. It is slightly changed from what we discussed last week at the meeting. If you don't read this letter, you won't know where to check-in. And that would be #sad.

1.) $20.16 for 2016 Challenge: We had only 3 people participate from our delegation and about 4 from El Do so far. That means your chances of winning the gift cards are pretty high! And if our delegation participates at 100%, we're probably a lock for the pizza party. Please consider making a gift or a pledge - talk with your parents and friends, too! The strength and size of our future delegation next year depends on our actions now! You can use the attached form - returned at check in on Thursday, or this link: http://bit.ly/SacCDonate

2). Sac Attire: Arrive in style on Thursday. You should know what to pack. But here's the dress code again, just in case. Don't overpack, but give yourself a few extra choices. And choose your shoes wisely! #packbandaids

3.) Boundaries: Here's a slightly better map of the conference boundaries. The Green Lines are the daytime boundaries. The Red Lines are the 8pm+ boundaries. Don't test the boundaries! You'll note that this year, for the first time, part of 16th Street is in-bounds. That means you can go to Mikuni and PF Changs. But don't blow your budget there and don't be late to sessions due to the extra distance!

4.) Food and Drink: We HIGHLY advise that you pack non-perishable breakfast food - at least enough for Friday morning (the most hectic, early start of the whole weekend). Oatmeal, granola bars, bananas, etc. Also, bring a refillable water-bottle. There are drinking fountains at the Convention Center, Capitol, and water stations in the hotels. It's economical and eco-friendly!

Remember - it's up to you to make sure you take time for meals. There IS time in everyone's day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Hunger and dehydration are the #1 cause of illness at conference - and they are both preventable. Take care of yourself.

5.) Schedule: It's very long, it's as confusing as ever, and it's easy to miss stuff. So check it out now! You'll get a paper copy on Thursday and the CalYMCA app will be updated as well. It's a good idea to download the app because program area-specific changes, room changes, etc are posted there. It's free and available for all phones. Delegation president, Vice President have special meetings to attend. Bill sponsors have special meetings to schedule and attend. Pretty much every program area has a little something extra to search for. Remember, you have sessions all the time and none are "optional" except for evening social activities!

6.) CONA and Awards Apps: I've only received recommendation requests from Victoria and Gus for CONA - so I'm assuming no one else is applying. If you are interested in applying for CONA - YOU SHOULD! - and you need to let me know ASAP. You need 2 letters of rec - one has to be from me - and the letter is due Thursday. The app is due Friday and is found in Reggo. Also, the Awards nomination form can be found here - those are due by Friday night!

7.) Top 5 Things to Pack (besides Sac Attire clothes):

- Band-aids for blisters
- Pen and Highlighter
- Delegation Sweatshirt

Home Stretch! Here's what you need to know:

1.) YMCA ANNUAL SUPPORT CAMPAIGN CHALLENGE: At the meeting Wednesday, you received information on the $20.16 for 2016 Challenge. I've also attached that info to this email. AND, for the first time, we have a website! You can use this link to make your gift and to share with friends and family: http://bit.ly/SacCDonate

Use this portal and we'll make sure to enter you in one or both gift card drawings (as applicable). You're still welcome to submit the paper pledge form with your donation to me at next week's meeting or on Feb 11 when you check in to the conference.

2.) MANDATORY Pre-Con meeting this week: Feb 3 is a mandatory meeting for all delegates (and highly recommended for parents) to prepare for our Feb 11-15 conference. We'll go over arrival and departure times, the schedule, meals, and more. Don't miss it.

3.) Code of Conduct: Delegates and Parents - please review the Code of Conduct prior to next week's meeting (attached).

4.) Dress Code Requirements: We reviewed these at the last meeting. If you didn't attend, please review the attached power point slides on Sac Attire and bring your questions to this week's meeting.

5.) NIC Proposal Practice: NIC delegate proposals are due on Friday, Jan 29. NIC delegates will practice their proposal presentations at this week's meeting. Please come prepared!

6.) No Meeting on Feb 10: Because the conference starts the next day.

7.) Conference on National Affairs and Youth Member of the Governing Board Applications: CONA applications area available in Reggo now. YOUR deadline to have them completed is FEBRUARY 1st. That is also the deadline by which you need to request the required Lead Advisor Recommendation from me.. Also available is the app to be the delegate member of the Youth & Government Governing Board. The delegate member represents delegates with the board and speaks for them on decisions that affect the program. Interested? Apply!

2.) NIC Delegates Bring your draft proposal to this meeting. It should be written down and in the appropriate format. Guidance is attached to this bulletin (as it has been for the past few weeks). You'll need to bring TEN copies of your proposal to Fresno. I need to sign at least one of them. If you'd like me to make copies for you, you'll need to give me the document to copy at the meeting on Wednesday.

The Y&G Interns organize a pop-up boutique of Sac attire offered at low or no cost to delegates at T&EII. You can bring gently used, clean, good condition professional attire with you to Fresno to donate.

I hope everyone had a safe and fun holiday. Now, let's look ahead to the last 6 weeks of the program year.

1.) Calendar: We don't have many meetings left. Two are absolutely mandatory. The other two, well, come on, be there.

Jan 6 - Regular meeting, final payment deadline - $250. All delegate account balances must be cleared by Friday, January 8 unless you have spoken with Christiana or Samia about an exception.
Jan 13 - MANDATORY pre-con meeting, NIC delegates should have proposal drafts
Jan 16-18 - T&EII in Fresno
Jan 20 - No Meeting?
Jan 27 - Regular meeting, Bill sponsors practice bill presentation
Feb 3 - MANDATORY final regular meeting, pre-con meeting
Feb 11-15 - 68th ML/C

2.) NIC Delegates You should begin thinking about your proposals. Please review the attached information on the NIC program area and proposal development process.  You also have Victoria and Efrain as resources since they both participated in NIC last year. You should have an idea selected by our Jan 6 meeting and a draft proposal by our Jan 13 meeting.

3.) DUE TODAY National Judicial Competition and Conference on National Affairs  There are two additional conferences to which you can apply that are national and convene during the summer. The NJC application is due January 4 and the CONA application will likely be due February 11. You can learn more about these here and here. The NJC application is already available in Reggo. I am going to work on having delegation alumni who have participated in these conferences visit a meeting or do a google hangout to answer your questions. We'll discuss CONA more at a future meeting, but you should read up now.

4.) Spring Conference Interest  Each April, there is a Y&G Spring Conference held in Corcoran, CA. It's a short weekend with NIC and Legislative House and it's really fun. It is great for delegates considering running for office next year or to recruit your friends for the program. We camp on the YMCA lawn in Corcoran, it's all very casual, there's still a dance, and there's a water slide. The conference this year is April 8-10.  The cost last year was $200 for program fees + Amtrak tickets (about $60-80). I don't yet know what this year's program fees will be. Financial assistance or an extended payment plan may be available. I would like to know if anyone is interested in attending. We do not yet know how many delegates we'll be able to take. Please let me know if you might like to attend or if you have friends who might be interested in checking out the program. So far, I've only heard from Gus.
