YG68 Delegation Bulletin #2: And we're off!

{Welcome to our weekly bulletin distribution list, new delegates and parents! You'll get a bulletin each week, usually on Fridays, but, clearly, sometimes on Mondays.}

So glad to see the year off to a great start! It was great to welcome to the meeting this week: Tilton Tiger, Katie Kangaroo, Allie Anteater, Jade Jaguar, Emiliano Egret, Delaney Dolphin, Mathew Monkey, Gus Gorilla, Efrain Elephant, Monse Moose, Dexter Dog, and Victoria Vulture, joined by advisors Robbie Rat, Rob Rabbit, and Christiana Caterpillar. Did I get them all right? (Absentees - you'll pick your animal at the next meeting :)

Here's what you need to know for this week:

1.) Volunteer Opportunity: The YMCA's health fair needs volunteers from 9am to 1pm on Saturday, September 12. Please fill out this form if you can help out! We're happy to sign-off on volunteer hour forms for school if you need them. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/12mwqJ-AbCKb1oQLD8EirLO5UWaD0zarccgW7dZMPruE/viewform

2.) Get a jump start on bill writing: what's this bill stuff about? All will be revealed soon. But if you're impatient, check this out:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B6ee6r3nMe6cNkNDckl0QXpFYnc

3.) Registration! Get those materials in. There is a $100 payment due next Wednesday, Sept 2. If you turned in your paperwork last week - THANKS! Make sure your first payment is on time this week. It is also the deadline for the Y-Assist application. If you have questions about anything, let me know ASAP.

All Registration materials, meeting handouts, and forms can be found here: http://bit.ly/SacCDocs

It's really important that you bring your materials and your first payment this week, especially the Y-Assist application WITH supporting documentation, if applicable. If the first $100 payment presents a hardship, email or call me to discuss. If you're applying for Y-Assist and the $100 is a hardship, bring what you can ($25, 50, etc) along with your materials this week. As I have mentioned, cost should NEVER cause us to lose an interested delegate. We're a community committed to make sure anyone who wants to participate in this program and makes a commitment to complete it can do so.

4.) Meeting location and time: THIS week, for our Sept 2 meeting on Wednesday we will meet at the YMCA at 6pm, same as we have been. After this week, we will be moving our meetings to the Tahoe Park Community Center and officers will meeting from 6-6:30 with regular meetings running from 6:30-7:30. This gives us a more reliable space with less furniture moving fun. If the location change presents a special hardship, please contact me ASAP. Details about the new location will be provided at the meeting on Wednesday.

YG68 Delegation Bulletin #1: Welcome [Back]!

Hooray for the start of another program year. It was great to see so many returning delegates this week AND so many new delegates, too! We're really excited for the coming year.

You'll receive weekly delegation bulletins (usually on Friday) so make sure to check your email or the FB group at least once a week (by Tuesday afternoon at the latest!) to keep up on the latest news and updates.

Here's what you need to know for next week:

1.) We'll meet again on Wednesday, August 26, at 6pm at the Sacramento Central YMCA (2021 W Street). This week, we'll jump into the bill writing basics after we spend some time getting to know one another. You'll also hear about our first fundraiser of the year and our upcoming Coalition retreat.

2.) Parents and delegates who missed the first meeting are invited to hang out after our regular meeting concludes to go over registration information and get all of your questions answered.

3.) Don't forget to bring back your registration materials! If you attended our meeting last Wednesday, you should've received registration materials for the year. If you couldn't make it (or if you lost your paperwork), just follow these steps to register:

(Remember) You can find all forms and meeting handouts any time in the Sac Central online docs and forms folder.

Here’s what you need to do to register for our program.

STEP 1: Complete the online registration form found here: http://bit.ly/capcoreg2015

STEP 2: Complete and return the registration packet found here:

STEP 3: Complete and return the Y-Assist Financial Aid application (if applicable) found here: Cover Letter and Application

STEP 4: Check out the Delegation Calendar found here.

STEP 5: Parents, there’s some interesting stuff here.

STEP 6: Questions? Check out this Contact Info doc on where to find answers:

4.) It's time to brush up on current events. Check out these articles about California policy and legislation. We might just chat about them a bit next week:
-Four years ago, California made Amazon start collecting sales tax for online purchases by Californians. How'd that work out? http://www.sacbee.com/news/business/article31669109.html
-Police training and tactics are in the news a lot right now. What do you think about the issue? http://www.latimes.com/local/crime/la-me-warrior-guardians-20150821-story.html
-Should research animals be made available for adoption? Returners: Can you find the legislation discussed in this article? http://www.latimes.com/local/political/la-me-pc-california-senate-acts-to-require-adoption-of-cats-and-dogs-used-in-research-20150820-story.html

Y&G Post-Con Bulletin #1: Wrapping It Up, Spring Con, etc

Have you recovered? (I haven't)

In case your advisors didn't mention it already: we are all crazy proud of what you accomplished at Sac Conference. You all took your program areas seriously, spoke well, were in session when you were supposed to be, and, the biggest point of pride for us - supported each other like crazy. This year seemed extra special. We hope you all enjoyed it.

We have three things left to do this year:

1.) Participate in the YMCA's annual support campaign. Our call-night will be next Wednesday, February 25, at 6pm. The location will be confirmed ASAP. You'll be calling other delegate families to ask for their help in supporting our YMCA. We'll train you on how to do it. It's a relatively painless process. And we expect to see everyone there, baring significant per-existing commitments. The campaign builds our Y-Assist fun. Whether or not you personally applied for Y-Assist you benefit from it since some members of our delegation need Y-Assist to participate. I hope you'll agree that losing even one of you would've been a blow to the entire team. I can't imagine having had such a great year without all of you there.

This is also the legacy our seniors leave behind: a guarantee that our delegation can thrive next year and beyond.

2.) Spring Conference!
Do you want to come? You need to a) email me that you want to come ASAP, b) submit your registration paperwork and initial deposit ASAP, c) go recruit some friends. As of now, Gus, Tony, and Victoria are the only three who have paid their deposit. You know there's a water slide, right? How could you miss it?

3.) PAR-TAY! Traditionally, Rob and I host a end-of-the-year party. This year, we might hold it at a restaurant so we can accommodate all of you and your parents and some guests. I'll need your help with input on this which means . . .GOOGLE FORM!

I guess there are 4 things left to do - Please complete this google form. It asks for your input on party plans, dates, and on meeting locations/days for Spring Con and next year. Please, please, please, don't delay in completing it. It's your last of the year. So exciting, right?!* You'll need to check in with your parents on some of these items before you answer - so make it a family activity.
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1xOe573AlMP0PcwP4xBuoCEFGOEH02GpQWshSGWkXQF4/viewform

*It's not the last form, that was a lie. Parents and delegates will be getting evaluation forms soon. Sorry. I can't stop google-forming.

Y&G Delegation Bulletin #17: Two Weeks To Go, Spring Conference

We are thiiiiis close to the end of the program year. How'd that happen?  Anyway - here's what you need to know this week:

1.) Deadlines:
-Awards Nominations - Due January 30th by 11:59pm - https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1r99-4m7Bx9aaD3ZEcaMxCjWW_YeUdQSifC96n8SklG4/viewform
Explanations of awards available at the link
-Conference On National Affairs - um, applications will be available . . . .soon? You can see what the app probably will look like by clicking here but DON'T FILL THIS ONE OUT, it is last year's. Tell me if you're planning to apply. I'll make sure you get the link as soon as it is available.  Probably due by arrival to Sac Conference
https://ymca.recruiterbox.com/jobs/fk0dv5

2.) MANDATORY meeting next week - Feb 4
Our pre-conference planning meeting is next Wednesday, Feb 4 at 6pm at the Y. Delegates are required to attend. Parents are encouraged to attend.

3.) Sac Attire
Attached is a slideshow about Sac Attire. If you have any questions about the dress code, bring them to next week's meeting (along with any clothing articles you're not sure about).

4.) Spring Conference
Loved your Y&G experience so far? Want to get one more conference in before graduation? Want to introduce friends to delegate life? Spring Conference, April 10-12, is for you! It's like a mini-Sac Conference, but with no dress code, camping, and a water slide. It's the best. Attached is the SpringCon registration packet.

If you are a returning delegate and you wish to attend you MUST bring back your completed registration materials and a $25 non-refundable deposit to next week's meeting to reserve your spot (space is limited).

The total program fees for Spring Conference are $200. That does not include train fare for travel between Sacramento and Corcoran (expected to be between $60-$80)

Extended payment plan options are available. Limited Y-Assist funds are available. If you applied for Y-Assist support for this past program year, your application will roll over to this event.

New delegates must submit deposits, Y-Assist Applications, and Registration packets by March 4.

5.) YMCA Annual Support CampaignEach year, the YMCA's Y-Assist fund supports community access to programs like Youth & Government, swim lessons, childcare, youth sports, summer camp, and more. Every February, YMCAs across the country hold their annual support campaigns to raise money to ensure no one is turned away from our programs due to financial concerns. Whether or not you personally received a Y-Assist award, we all benefit from the participation of each member of our delegation.

And so, to give back, we'll be having an Annual Support Campaign Call Night on Wednesday, February 25, 2015, at the YMCA. This is a mandatory event for all delegates. It's a fun and easy and requires just a couple of hours of your time. Mark your calendars!

Y&G Delegation Bulletin #16: Welcome to 2015!

Did everyone have a great Winter Break? Hope you rested up because we're going to hit the ground running!

1.) Meeting January 7: We're back to our regular meeting schedule this week. Agenda highlights: Conference Preview, Food Drive Planning with Victoria, NIC proposal help for our NIC peeps, and more!

NOTE MEETING LOCATION CHANGE FOR JAN 7 ONLY:

Late breaking news update:

We still need to wrap up the bill boxes project so we're going to combine that with our meeting this week. Accordingly, we will be meeting at the Y&G HQ ****not at our YMCA****.

Here is where you need to be:

2555 3rd Street, Suite 215
Sacramento CA 95818

Our meeting will go from 6:15 to 8pm. (The start time is adjusted a bit to ensure that everyone can arrive on time)

Delegates, please email Christiana so that she knows you know where our meeting is this Wednesday.

1a.) NIC delegates: you should have sketched out some proposal ideas. You'll need to have a draft proposal to take with you to T&EII. Remember that Tony is a great NIC resource! And your delegation is happy to be an idea sounding board.

2.) A new google form for a new year! Huzzah - you LOVE these, right? In this edition: payment reminders, community service opportunities and more. All information I need from you that's easiest to collect this way. It's also handy for checking up on who reads the bulletin. Make sure you click and complete today:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1-el_vPdL3SiC0s0QYS-Jje87JJoxrdUAipd36uj7_YE/viewform

3.) Payment reminder: your final payment is due this Wednesday, January 7. If your parent is going to call in a payment or drop it off, please do so BEFORE the Wednesday meeting. We need all payments in on time this week. Thanks!

4.) Hotel Room Assignments for T&EII: This week, you'll be grouping yourselves into hotel rooms for Fresno. We'll have two male rooms of 4 each, 1 female room of 3, and 1 female room of 4. Please make this process kind or we'll take over for you. Note that during the Fresno conference you will not be permitted to return to the hotel during conference hours so you'll be spending barely any time there at all anyway and you'll all be next door to each other.

5.) Application deadlines are coming! NJC, CONA, etc etc - some stuff needs letters of rec, some don't.  Don't let things go to the last minute!

Calendar Highlights:
January 7:                  Final Payment Due ($250 or balance of program fees)
January 17:                National Judicial Competition Deadline
January 17:                Conference on National Affairs Application Available
January 17-19:          Training & Elections Conference II, Fresno, CA
February 1:                Conference on National Affairs Application Deadline

Y&G Delegation Bulletin #15: A Busy December‏

Jingle Bells, Here's some info:

1.) Payment: A payment was due at our December 3 meeting. Please bring your payment to the December 10th meeting.

2.) Community Service Project - speaking of the December 10th meeting, if we can find a community service project (outside of the Y) to do next week we may do that instead of a regular meeting. Ideas? Send them along, quick! otherwise, same bat time and bat channel.

ADDENDUM: Rose's family has forwarded this opportunity. You can indicate your availability on the sign up form linked below and we'll see whether we can make it happen:
With the cold and wet weather finally here, those who are homeless in Sacramento are more in need of a warm, dry place to sleep than ever. Help us to make CBI that safe haven THIS Monday night!  On Monday evening, Dec 8, our congregation will host 80 to 100 homeless individuals for the night as part of the countywide Winter Sanctuary Program. We need volunteers anytime between 1pm and 8pm (you won't need to stay overnight!) to set up the Social Hall, prepare dinner in the afternoon, serve dinner at 5:30pm, interact with our guests, and to serve breakfast (very) early the following morning. We also will need food donations to make the dinner and breakfast possible.

3.) Swim With Santa - is next Friday. We can use help as early as 3pm, however, the official volunteer start time is 5pm. You'll be done by 8pm.
Please complete this form so I know who is coming. Remember, this is required unless you have a significant preexisting commitment.
AND Parking Lot Fundraiser - there's a big Antique Fair under the freeway across from the Y. We let people park in our lot for a donation. It can make us a lot of money, depending on the weather. We need volunteers. Easiest possible job imaginable except that you have to wake up early on a Sunday. 7a -11a at the YMCA.
(Same sign up form)
AND Bill Box Project - we help the Y&G office organize the bill boxes - that's all the legislation from all of the other delegations. It's easy - but time consuming. We'll meet over at the Y&G offices on 3rd Street. I don't know for sure what dates, but I have tentative ones on the same form.
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1TjfZnfgZyaADu69bdQXdNYCtO7qgiepbSWfUqXlF3Kw/viewform

Y&G Delegation Bulletin #14: Gobble Up This Great Info!

Happy Thanksgiving! In the rush of Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday, I hope you'll all consider supporting the less prominently branded, but more important Giving Tuesday by supporting your favorite charity or cause. That could be our delegation or the Y, or your local food bank, shelter, animal rescue, etc . . . . 'Tis the season!

Also - there's a reading test in here. Just sayin'.

1.) No Meeting This Week - there will be no meeting tomorrow (11/25).

2.) Application Madness!  - If you are interested in applying for an elected or appointed leadership position, the Conference on National Affairs, the National Judicial Competition, the MUN Secretariat Program, or the Y&G Governing Board, applications must be submitted by December 4 so I can approve them before 11:59pm on December 5. Except I won't be awake that late because I am very old. So you should text/email me that you have an application that needs approval by Noon on Friday, December 5. And if your application requires an advisor letter of recommendation, I need to know by Monday, December 1. Applications are in Reggo under our registration. Email me if you can't find them.
Here's a link to program areas and leadership opportunities.

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1BOGMo6SWUQSdjGndjbkyZ87pmRuq9tOCwqYSMLaSDH0/viewform
There is a $10 max (not a minimum or a target) for gifts. Handmade, funny, etc, all welcome. We'll be exchanging at our December 17 Meeting/Holiday Party. Please complete this form by tomorrow night. (ahem - READING TEST!)

5.) Payment: A $250 payment is due at our December 3 meeting. If you applied for a Y&G individual scholarship, we expect to hear from the office about awards on December 2. Y&G Delegation Bulletin #13: Bye Bob and a bye week

That was an amazing weekend! I hope you all had a great time at our first Training & Elections Conference. I am proud of each and every one of you. You all seemed to dive in enthusiastically (even when super tired) and I loved watching you all learn about the program and each other and support your fellow delegates. Thanks for your hard work! Only a few things to share this week:

1.) No Meeting This Week - there will be no meeting tomorrow (11/12). Next week's meeting (11/19) will feature an explanation of CONA, NJC, the Governing Board, and the MUN Secretariat program. Don't know what any of those things are? All the more reason to make sure you're there next week. We'll also talk cheer-prep for the next conference AND program area selection. Which brings us to . . .

2.) Bob I Survey and Program Area Preferences: Please complete this google form ASAP. When you submit it, you can save a link to go back and alter your program area preferences in case you change your mind. You'll have until Monday, November 17 to make changes on the form - after that, you'll have to email me.
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/130HmIYA1UPD9pNWt-nE-V4zA73sQguRyPwzVHx1UfKg/viewform?usp=send_form

3.) Program Area Availability: Here are the program areas we have to choose from based on the size of our delegation. If the area you want isn't listed, don't panic! As mentioned over the weekend, advisors engage in a competitive market of program are slot swaps. We live for it. So just make sure you complete that form above so I know what to try to get for you:
Appellate Court: 1
Assembly: 2
Bench Trial: 1
Board of Education: 1
Constitutional Convention: 1
Dept of Finance: 1
IAC: 0
Judicial Review: 0
Legislative Analyst: 1
Lobbyist: 1
Media Program: 1
NIC: 2
Political Parties: 0
Polling: 0
Senate: 2

4.) Button sales: Good work, all! We sold $614.75 worth of buttons which, after paying the cost of making the buttons, gives us a net profit of $344.75. This money helps ensure that our delegation completes the program year together. Every button we sell from now on (our FresYes! buttons) is pure profit. Thanks!

Y&G Delegation Bulletin #12- Let's get our Con On! (That's Conference)

Wow. Bill Hearing Night was AMAZING. I am so, so proud of all of your hard work and appreciative of the many families and community members who came out to support you last night. I really can't think of a better Bill Hearing Night out of the many I've seen. You should all be proud of yourselves. A big thank you to the Bill Sponsors for stepping up to the challenge. Good job with your Sac Attire, too. I don't think I saw anyone out of dress code. This bodes well for Sac Conference in February!

Four things this week:

1.) Training & Elections Conference (Bob) I: Departure information and packing list for our first conference are attached. Note: We are NOT leaving from the Y this year. Please read the attached or you'll be left behind. Robbie will be the advisor you check in with when you arrive at White Rock Elementary. Rob and Christiana will meet you at Camp Roberts.

Don't forget to pack for two weather extremes - warm sunshine in the day, and COLD at night. You'll likely need something heavier than your delegation sweatshirt, so pack accordingly. Remember your sleeping bag and pillow! And many delegates find it comfortable to bring a twin-size fitted sheet for the bed mattresses which tend to be a little dusty (as are most things at Camp Roberts.

Attached is a draft of the schedule. Feel free to check it out. You do not need to print it as a copy will be given to you at the conference. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you bring a highlighter to mark where you need to be and when - the schedule isn't the easiest thing to follow. Also, there may be some changes between this version and the final version on Saturday.

2.) Button Sales: We'll be selling buttons this weekend to raise money for the delegation. They commemorate our last visit to Camp Roberts and celebrate our move to Fresno in January. We'll have to come up with some kind of award for whomever can sell the most! Free lunch at In-n-Out on the way back from the conference, maybe? I heard we had some excellent sales people at the Auction - let's see who can beat them with buttons. . . .

3.) Holiday Festival CHANGES: Due to circumstances beyond our control, we've had to cancel our usual plans for the Holiday Festival on December 6. Instead, some of our vendors will attend Swim With Santa night on Friday, December 12 from 5-8pm at the YMCA. All delegates are expected to volunteer at this event (which is super cute and a lot of fun). Delegates will help with arts & crafts for kids and serving holiday treats. And with promoting the event!

4.) Meeting Schedule: There will be *no* meeting on Wednesday, November 12 after we return from Camp Roberts. There is also no meeting on Wednesday, November 26 due to Thanksgiving. That leaves November 19 as our only regular meeting this month. Please do your best to attend this meeting. We'll be discussing a lot of important things including role selection for the remainder of the conference. You won't want to miss it. (We will meet again on 12/3, 12/10, 12/12 at Swim With Santa, and 12/17.)
