YG68 Delegation Bulletin #2: And we're off!

{Welcome to our weekly bulletin distribution list, new delegates and parents! You'll get a bulletin each week, usually on Fridays, but, clearly, sometimes on Mondays.}

So glad to see the year off to a great start! It was great to welcome to the meeting this week: Tilton Tiger, Katie Kangaroo, Allie Anteater, Jade Jaguar, Emiliano Egret, Delaney Dolphin, Mathew Monkey, Gus Gorilla, Efrain Elephant, Monse Moose, Dexter Dog, and Victoria Vulture, joined by advisors Robbie Rat, Rob Rabbit, and Christiana Caterpillar. 1.) Volunteer Opportunity: The YMCA's health fair needs volunteers from 9am to 1pm on Saturday, September 12. Please fill out this form if you can help out! 3.) Registration! Get those materials in. There is a $100 payment due next Wednesday, Sept 2. If you turned in your paperwork last week - THANKS! Make sure your first payment is on time this week. It's really important that you bring your materials and your first payment this week, especially the Y-Assist application WITH supporting documentation, if applicable. If the first $100 payment presents a hardship, email or call me to discuss. If you're applying for Y-Assist and the $100 is a hardship, bring what you can ($25, 50, etc) along with your materials this week. As I have mentioned, cost should NEVER cause us to lose an interested delegate. We're a community committed to make sure anyone who wants to participate in this program and makes a commitment to complete it can do so.

4.) Meeting location and time: THIS week, for our Sept 2 meeting on Wednesday we will meet at the YMCA at 6pm, same as we have been. After this week, we will be moving our meetings to the Tahoe Park Community Center and officers will meeting from 6-6:30 with regular meetings running from 6:30-7:30. This gives us a more reliable space with less furniture moving fun. If the location change presents a special hardship, please contact me ASAP. Details about the new location will be provided at the meeting on Wednesday.

YG68 Delegation Bulletin #1: Welcome [Back]!

Hooray for the start of another program year. It was great to see so many returning delegates this week AND so many new delegates, too! We're really excited for the coming year.

You'll receive weekly delegation bulletins (usually on Friday) so make sure to check your email or the FB group at least once a week (by Tuesday afternoon at the latest!) to keep up on the latest news and updates.

Here's what you need to know for next week:

1.) We'll meet again on Wednesday, August 26, at 6pm at the Sacramento Central YMCA (2021 W Street). This week, we'll jump into the bill writing basics after we spend some time getting to know one another. You'll also hear about our first fundraiser of the year and our upcoming Coalition retreat.

2.) Parents and delegates who missed the first meeting are invited to hang out after our regular meeting concludes to go over registration information and get all of your questions answered.

3.) Don't forget to bring back your registration materials! If you attended our meeting last Wednesday, you should've received registration materials for the year. If you couldn't make it (or if you lost your paperwork), just follow these steps to register:

Y&G Delegation Bulletin #5: Registration, Baby Bob, Fundraising

Happy 5th Bulletin, everyone! Here's the news you need this week. There are two action items.

***We WILL have a regular meeting this Wednesday, September 24 from 6-7:30pm***

Please fill out your complete information (address, parent info, etc, etc)  If you are a returning delegate, information you entered last year should pop up. Review for accuracy. New delegates can either create a Reggo account with their email address or sign-in using Facebook.  Make sure that you select "SACRAMENTO CENTRAL" from the drop-down menu of delegations, when prompted.

2.) Teen Leadership Conference (aka "Baby Bob") will take place at the Sacramento YMCA from 1:30pm Saturday, September 27 through 12:00 noon Sunday, September 28. For those not in attendance this week: a storm last winter rendered several cabins unusable and those housing concerns combined with transportation concerns would've led to the exclusion of many interested delegates. We don't like exclusion! So we're moving the party to the YMCA and it's going to be AMAZING. Also, it's going to be way less than $60 which hopefully will encourage more of you to attend. We're still finalizing some details, but expect the price to be $20 or under. 3.) Mixed Bags sales: Keep selling! Orders due on October 1. Remember to collect 8.5% sales tax on all orders. Checks are payable to the Sacramento YMCA.

4.) Fundraising: Remember to mark your calendars for the Kids Are Y Auction on October 17 and our Holiday Festival on December 6 - these are our two biggest fundraising events of the year. 5.) Gubernatorial Candidate Neel Kashkari Visits El Dorado: El Dorado Delegation has invited us to attend a meet-the-candidate night next Thursday, September 25, in the cafeteria at Oak Ridge High School in El Dorado Hills from 7-8:30pm. Delegates and families are invited to attend. Transportation will not be provided, but we encourage you to carpool if you'd like to go. If you have questions about the event, email me.

Y&G Delegation Bulletin #3: Bill research, payments, and more

Welcome to the list, new parents and delegates - glad to have you! Each week, you'll receive a delegation bulletin with all the news you need to know for the week ahead. 1.) Registration, First $100, and Y-Assist Applications MUST be submitted by next Wednesday, September 10: If you've misplaced the forms, you can find everything you need here: http://saccentraldelegation.blogspot.com/p/forms-and-downloads.html

2.) Payments, continued: All delegates are required to submit the initial $100 payment, regardless of whether a Y-Assist application is submitted. If this amount presents a financial hardship for your family, please contact Christiana or Mia ASAP to arrange for a payment schedule. To guarantee your spot in the delegation, you need to have provided your $100 initial payment or have discussed extenuating circumstances with Christiana or Mia by September 10.

3.) Bill Ideas: We had a great first discussion about bill ideas yesterday! If you missed the meeting, or want to read up on some more research tips and tricks, check out this document. It's long, but it's meant as a reference guide. http://goo.gl/MPiO4E

4.) "What Should I Bring To Meetings?" Bill Writing Edition: You don't need much at Y&G meetings, but we ask that you bring your calendar or planner, a notebook/paper, and a pen to each meeting. During the next few weeks as we're discussing legislation and researching ideas, you are encouraged to bring a lap top or tablet, if you have one (obviously, it's not required).

6.) Fall Coalition Camping Trip, Sept 26-28: Those of you who'd like to join us for our annual trip to Bear Valley Y Camp in the High Sierra. This is a chance to get to know each other and make new friends from our sister delegation based in El Dorado Hills. This trip requires is not mandatory and requires an additional $60 payment not covered by the standard program fees. More information is coming soon.
7.) Legislative Research Scavenger Hunt: Not mandatory - but a few quick exercises to get you familiar with the research process and looking at California laws and legislation. The attached document will probably help you!

Question 1: You've read a terrible article about a kid whose parents never gave him enough food or let him go to the doctor or even let him leave the house. You are incensed! There should be a law against that sort of thing. In fact, this will be the basis of your bill this year. But, is there a law that covers this already? Keep track of  your research process!

Question 2: During the past summer, with school out and lazy days abounding, you really made the most of out Netflix. The last film you watched before returning to school was "Black Fish" a documentary about the effects of captivity on orcas. You were so moved by the film that you decide to write legislation banning keeping orcas in captivity. Where in California law might such a law best fit? Keep track of your research process!

Y&G Bulletin #2: Getting our Legislati-On

(Our first few bulletins of the year will be especially information heavy while we're still collecting registration and financial assistance applications and getting everyone up and running. Thanks for paying attention to all of this important information!)

2) Bill ideas: This week, we'll begin discussing the bill development process. Think about what problems you'd like to fix in our state. Come prepared for the next meeting by checking out this information about where bills come from and what kind of bills we deal with in Y&G. Feel free to bring your laptop or tablet if you want. 3) Pop Quiz: Who likes Pizza? If ten delegates reply to Christiana directly in an email telling her a) what kind of pizza they like and b) which of the four kinds of legislation you would use to require the State Department of Fish and Wildlife to track squirrel populations in California, we'll have pizza at our next meeting. (hint, answer is in the link in item #2)

4) Registration packets should be returned next week. If you lost your paperwork, you can visit this link to download and complete. If you missed the last meeting, you can *still* download and complete the form and be all caught up at the next meeting. Please include your medical and dental coverage policy numbers, as requested on the registration forms.

5) Payment schedule revisions. We have changed the payment schedule. The new schedule can be seen in the registration materials linked above or you can pick up a new copy at next week's meetings. First payments are due next Wednesday, September 3. The amount due is $100.

Your application will not be considered without the required attachments. If your tax and other paperwork doesn't provide a complete picture of your need, please also attach a separate letter explaining your circumstances. Y-Assist applicants are required to make at least a $100 payment as well, however, you can spread that out over the few weeks we have between now and the initial payment deadline. Please bring something with your application - whether it's $20, $50, or $100. At the same time, if you have special circumstances, please talk with us ASAP. Y&G Bulletin #1: Welcome New Delegates!

Hello! Welcome to another exciting year of Youth & Government. We're glad to have you (or to have you back, in some cases). Each week, I'll be sending a bulletin with delegation information. It's important that you take a few minutes to read this email each week - you'll be prepared, informed, and happy, if you! Oh, also, sometimes, we hide easter eggs in the bulletins with little reading tests that can earn you prizes. It's all part of the fun. So here we go:

1) Registration packets should be returned next week. If you lost your paperwork, you can visit this link to download and complete. If you missed the last meeting, you can *still* download and complete the form and be all caught up at the next meeting.

Delegation Bulletin #13: Parents, We Need Your Help!‏

Have I mentioned yet how proud I am of all of our delegates? Great Bill Hearing Night, great conference weekend . . . this year is going so well and that's all down to each of you!

Here's what you need to know/do this week
(the alternative title of this week's bulletin could also be "Fun With Google Forms.")

1.) Please complete your Bob I survey and role preferences: http://goo.gl/pFwjAf
(As part of that process, you will need to register for Bob II: https://app.reggo.org/calymca

Also, you should have received a surveymonkey survey from the Y&G head office. Please take a moment to complete that as well.

2.) Future Leaders Campaign & YMCA Strong Kids Campaign: Each year, Y&G undertakes a massive fundraising campaign (just like we do at the delegation level). Similarly, our own Sacramento YMCA (and all YMCAs) conduct their annual fundraising campaigns. Both campaigns work much in the same way: campaigners call Y&G supporter or Y members and ask for donations. We need two volunteers for the Future Leaders Campaign and two volunteers for the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign (the same people can volunteer for both). You'll receive training on how to fundraise. Future Leaders campaigners get to go to a few special meetings during Bob II and Sac Conference. Please email Christiana ASAP if you'd like to volunteer.

3.) Speaking of volunteering! (PARENTS: This is the part where we need your help) We discussed our upcoming Holiday Festival at the last meeting.  Here's a google form to complete about volunteering for the day. ALL delegates are required to complete it. Parents, we ask you also to click through and read about the event and consider donating some of your time. We need to line up approximately 25 volunteers to be on-hand at all times during the day (which means more than 25 people as we'll have some shifts of volunteers scheduled). 4.) Historian needed! Alberto would like us to elect/select a delegation historian. Responsibilities include documenting our events with pictures and helping us create a Delegation newsletter quarterly. Those interested should come to the next meeting prepare to give a short speech about their qualifications.

5.) Causes.com fundraiser: once again this year, we'll be conducting a fundraising push through causes.com. This online platform sends contributions directly to our YMCA. Donating is fast and easy and secure. Donations can range from a minimum of $10 to ???? Please share this link on your Facebook page or via email to friends and family.  Proceeds will help us meet remaining need this year, seed next year's scholarship fund (yes, already!), and also support the reestablishment of our sister program for middle-schoolers, the Model United Nations.

Last year, we raised $1005, this year, we want to continue on to the $2000 mark!

Delegation Bulletin #3: Getting Down To Business

Thank you to all of the parents and new delegates who attended our Parents' Night. We hope you found answers to all of your questions. If not, let us know!

We still have room for new delegates, so grab those friends you've been meaning to bring along, and come on down. The sooner you join, the more fun you have.

This week, we'll get down to business as we discuss current events and bill ideas, along with the elected and appointed leadership posts that give you a chance to step-up to leadership.

Most Important Thing This Week:
We want to make you official, but we can't without your registration forms and your initial $100 payment. If you haven't submitted your forms, please bring them next week. If you need to print a copy, click here. Or, bring a parent to the meeting and fill out everything on Wednesday!

If the initial $100 payment presents a challenge and/or you need to apply for financial aid, make sure to submit that application along with your registration material. Applications must be submitted with supporting documentation or they cannot be considered. If the initial $100 presents a challenge, please bring what you can - $50, $20? - and discuss with an advisor or with Mia.  Application is available at the same link.

Why is this especially important this week? Because we potentially will have some delegation decisions on which to vote and only registered delegates will likely be eligible. Final eligibility determination will be decided by your delegation president. Don't miss your chance to make your voice count!

Delegation Bulletin #1: Welcome New And Returning Delegates!

We had a great turn-out for our first meeting of the year on Wednesday. It was wonderful to see returning faces and quite a few new ones as well. We hope those of you that took a leap of faith on attending the first meeting liked what you heard enough to come back next Wednesday, August 28, for our second meeting of the new year.

Spring Conference Scholarship for New Delegates

If you are a new delegate, click here to apply for a Spring Conference Scholarship. Funds are extremely limited and we may not be able to accommodate all requests. Applicants must also complete and submit the Y-assist application with all supporting documentation. Incomplete applications will not be considered. The deadline for this application is March 6, 2013.

We'll hold our first meeting of the 2012-13 program year on Monday, September 10, 2012, at 6:30pm at the Sacramento YMCA (2021 W Street, Sacramento, CA 95818)

All delegates are expected to help with the carnival during the conference. This is our chance to raise some money to get our scholarship fund levels up again!

We badly need parents, family, or friends to volunteer for the parking lot and sales event on Sunday. Don't leave us hanging. 

Reminders

1.) The delegation and program calendars are attached to this email for your review.

2.) We need stopwatches (or watches with second hands/timers) for the conference - can you lend one?

3.) $1 donation to the pizza fund for every delegate who replies to this email by saying "I'm ready to help at the carnival!"

4.) $2 donation to the pizza fund for every delegation officer who does the same.

5.) Donations for the community garage sale should be dropped off at the Y starting Wednesday.

2010 Conference on National Affairs (CONA) Application Available!

No, it's not in Hawaii . . .

The Conference on National Affairs was started in 1968 to provide a follow up to the statewide Model Legislature and Court programs. The Conference is an assembly of more than 500 Youth and Government and Model United Nations participants from around the country. All delegates are selected by their home states to write and debate proposed solutions to problems which are national and international in their scope.

Here are the application materials. Applications are due upon arrival to Sac Conference on February 11. You'll need an advisor signature and recommendation - so if you're interested, don't delay in getting started and letting your advisor know!

Delegation Bulletin 9

IMPORTANT: If you have any coupon books, or money collected from the sales of coupon books, in your possession - BRING THE BOOKS/MONEY TO THE MEETING THIS WEEK. We need to figure out where a lot of outstanding books are or else we can't get more from the company. You can take them away with you again after the meeting, but we need to know FOR SURE where they are.

December 11 - December $200 payment is due (be smart: bring it to the meeting on Dec 10)
December 11 - Bill Supplement packets due (again, be smart, if you're a bill sponsor, and bring to the Dec 10 meeting)

Announcements:
We're considering organizing an afternoon of childcare at the YMCA as a fundraiser. Parents would pay a set amount for up to 4 hours of supervised activities for their kids so they can go Christmas shopping, etc. Money raised by the event would benefit those delegates who volunteer to work the event. We don't have details yet. Who is interested in helping with this? (Assume it will be an afternoon event. There are no set hours yet). We're looking at Saturday, December 19.

Reminders/News for the Week:

1.) KEEP FUNDRAISING! Coupon book sales are still going on and can through at least Bob II - maybe longer. This is money you can be earning. So go get it. Also, I sent a good number of you information on how to contact elected officials for help with sponsorships. So far, no one has shown me a draft letter.

2.) Thanks to the efforts of your advisors, we have secured an additional $500 in scholarship money. This money will ONLY be distributed to those who have a) completed the YMCA's need application (given out so many times now, I've lost count) AND b) to those who demonstrate fundraising efforts and participation in delegation meetings and events.

If you have not turned in this form yet - it is due at the December 10 meeting. NO EXCEPTIONS.

3.) Thanks for a mostly successful bill hearing night. It was great to see so many parents there and I think our other special guests were impressed by your efforts. We're almost there on getting everyone to show up for meetings on time. As far as I know, only Angelik and Joseth let Patrick or Christiana know about delays in getting to the meeting on time. Other latecomers: you need to let Patrick or Christiana know if you're going to be late.

More Leadership Opportunities!

Are you ready to REALLY take on a challenge? Here are some more chances to demonstrate your leadership skills and really shine in Y&G!

There are two categories of offices on this nomination form (one link for everything listed below)

(Oh, and these are ELECTED positions, so get ready to run. You can totally do this.)

First, statewide leadership - that means Youth Governor or Secretary of State. You'll need to be around next year to pursue these offices, so no seniors. :(

Second, some great program area leadership roles:
Attorney General (10,11,12 - prior Y&G)
Presiding Justice (10,11,12 - prior Y&G)
District Attorney (10,11,12 - prior Y&G)
NIC Adversary General (yeah, I think they have two forms for this - if you're interested, we'll sort it out. See the other post for qualifications.)
NIC Administrative Clerk (10,11,12 - no prior experience required)
SGT-AT-Arms (Senate/Assembly)(10,11,12 - no prior experience required)
Secretary of the Senate (10,11,12 - no prior experience required)
Chief Clerk of the Assembly (10,11,12 - no prior experience required)
SIP Presiding Commissioner (not sure - contact Christiana if you're interested in this position)

All of these are due December 4 and all require an Advisor signature! Don't delay!

(Note: there are limits on how many people from a delegation can run for particular categories. I don't think we'll hit them, so unless that becomes an issue, it's nothing to worry about.)
