2019-20 El Dorado Youth and Government Delegation Bulletin #13

"I have discovered in life that there are ways of getting almost anywhere you want to go, if you really want to go.”  Langston Hughes

1.) Payment Reminder: Payments were due last week, however, we'll grant an amnesty period through tomorrow, Wednesday, Nov 21 at noon, through which all who make their payments will receive the 3 points for on time payments! You can pay online here or call the YMCA Front Desk (916-452-9622 ext 0) and provide a credit card number over the phone.

2.) Points Here, Get Your Points! Now that T&E 1 is over, its time to think about what program area you would like to be in this year. How we in El Dorado determine this is through our points system. If you have been wondering why delegates care about "points," this is why. We will hold a "program area draft," this year on Dec 12th, where the delegates pick their program areas in order of how many points they have. The more points, the better chances you have of getting the program area you want! There are still several other opportunities to get points, such as filling out the surveys and attending the CIM. Make sure to do those to ensure you get the program area of your choice! Click here to see where you rank in the delegation. (Shout out to Savanna Crist for having the most points right now!)

3.) Role Selection: As mentioned above, program area assignments will happen on Dec 20th! This process will determine your role at T&EII and Sac Conference. Here are the spots we are allotted this year. (We've factored out Forum kids and those who were appointed to leadership roles, and in I&A, and thus get a spot in that program area already.)

4.) Political Party Swaps. If you want to change your political party then complete this form by Thursday, November 21 at 11:59pm. I know the form says due Nov 28th, but Nov 21 is our El Dorado internal deadline. This is the only opportunity to change parties this year. Let me know if you submit this form. You are not guaranteed your first choice of new party assignment. There is also a delegation percentage cap per party, so not everyone in one delegation can all be in one party.

5.) CIM December 8. Click here for a list of aid station assignments for all who completed the post-conference survey and signed up. Detailed information on the event (including parking, what to wear, tasks, etc) will be emailed to you the week of December 2. Remember, those who attend the Folsom Station receive 8 points. Those who attend the Sacramento station receive 9 points. If you fail to show up at your aid station without providing an advanced, valid excuse to Derek, you will lose 5 points. Stations need a minimum for 40 people each so changing from the Sacramento Station to the Folsom Station is not likely possible.

6.) Additional Program Apps: CONA, NJC, Advocacy Day, and more are all available in Reggo. Ask Derek if you have questions on any of these. More info will be provided at an upcoming meeting.

7.) Save the Date! Celebration Banquet 2020: We'll convene our post-sac conference Celebration Banquet on a new date in a new location this year. Make sure you add Sunday, February 23, 2020 at the Sacramento Central YMCA to your calendars now. Tickets will go on sale in January.

Gold Country Delegation Bulletin #11: Do Your Research + Leadership and Special Programs Galore!

This may shock you: we have only 8 meetings left this year given all the holiday breaks we have coming up, and that includes our holiday party and two pre-con meetings! We'll work to make each meeting and event count as we get ready for the second and third conferences this year. Make sure to check out the updated calendar at the bottom of this email. We have lots coming up!

At the next meeting:  We'll randomly choose our Secret Winter Wizard assignments and finalize your program selection. Also, it's time for our beloved Toastmasters Speech Meeting! You have the option to show up and deliver extemporaneous ("off-the-cuff") speeches only, or you may prepare a 1-2 minute speech on any topic of your choosing in addition to the extemporaneous. A suggested topic, sent via GroupMe, has to do with current local politics, and you've met the subject personally as a guest speaker: In light of her behavior, should Nevada City take away Mayor Reinette Senum's title of "Mayor"? Why or why not? Research theunion.com and yubanet.com for details about the case.
What's due: Leadership Applications, Secretariat Application, I&A program area application
Now overduePayment #3

1.) Elected/Appointed Leadership Apps - Due by Wednesday--that's tomorrow! So far it looks like I can get everyone their first or second choice without a problem. But if you plan to apply for office, it can affect your program area. Get your elected/appointed leadership application in NOW so that I can plan accordingly.

To see how to access apps, click here. For a list of available elected and appointed positions, including qualifications, click here. I strongly encourage you to apply for a leadership position! Campaigning and interviewing can be stressful but the experience is so valuable through every step, regardless of the outcome!

2.) LAST CALL: MUN Secretariat Program: MLC has a companion program for middle school students called Model United Nations (MUN). MLC delegates are eligible to serve as MUN Secretariats - leaders who help the Model UN Ambassadors succeed in their roles at conferences by teaching them and being role models. Details on the Secretariat duties can be found here. (disregard the deadlines in this document, however). If you plan to apply, please do so by the end of Thursday's meeting.

While not required to attend local MUN delegation meetings (expected to be on Tuesday starting in January), Gold Country Secretariats are welcome and encouraged to do so. There are two conferences to attend, however, over March 14-15 (Santa Cruz Mountains) and April 23-26 (Los Angeles). There is a $515 cost to participate and financial aid is available. If you are interested in applying for financial aid, make sure to complete the Secretariat application on time and let an advisor know.

3.) Role Selection. As I said previously, it's looking like everyone will get their first or second choice of program area. Here are the assignments as they currently stand:
Anni & Mia: Houses
Jihada: Bench Trial
Nalasia: Media
Sabine: Board of Education
Skyler: Appellate Court
Ethan & Zayo: Forum

I will confirm Thursday.

4.) California International Marathon - Sunday December 8 - 6:45am-12:30pm: It's that time of year again! Grab your mittens and get ready to stir some Nuun, this is an all-hands event! Thanks to those who completed the survey and signed up. I'm thrilled that we have ALMOST 100% sign-ups for this fun event. Make sure you've noted this date on your calendar. We'll review details the meeting before the event.

5.) Meeting Note: December 12th is MJ's husband's birthday, and, this year, also a Thursday. In the spirit of healthy priorities, we will not have a formal meeting that night. However, you are encouraged to meet as a delegation at one of your houses or at a local coffee shop.

Gold Country Delegation Bulletin #10

What a tremendous weekend! I hope you all had a great time conquering some fears, meeting new people, and learning more about program areas. A huge congratulations to our two leadership candidates. Putting yourself out there is an endeavor, but without a doubt, Mia and Zayo got some amazing, experience this weekend, embracing our delegation value of GROWTH MINDSET. Way to make us proud, both of you!

At the next meeting: Post-Conference Debrief, Review of Elected and Appointed Leadership Round 2, Applied Programs, other opportunities; Review of DoD progress so far this year; and more!
What's duePayment #3

1.) Yes, Meeting Tonight Night: 6:30, officers at 6pm

2.) Two Forms to Complete ASAP:
3.) Political Party Swaps. If you want to change your political party then complete this form by Thursday, November 21 at 11:59pm. This is the only opportunity to change parties this year. Let me know if you submit this form. You are not guaranteed your first choice of new party assignment.

4.) Issues & Activism Program Area Application. If you are interested in serving in I&A this year as your program area,  you must complete this application by Sunday, November 17, 2019. You must also let me know TONIGHT if you intend to complete that application as delegates serving in that program area cause our number of spots in other program areas to change, which impacts the entire delegation.

5.) Role Selection. Program area assignments will happen soon! This process will determine your role at T&EII and Sac Conference. Here are the spots we are allotted this year (non-Forum) IF no one signs up for I&A:

Appellate Court: 1
ConCon: 1
DoF: 1
Houses: 2
Lobbyist: 1
Total: 7

I'll do my best to swap our way into more spots but be aware that ConCon is the hardest program area to secure spots for, followed by IAC, DOF, and Lobbyist (usually, though it can vary year to year). I do everything I can to get folks their top choice, but, adjust your expectations accordingly.

6.) Elected/Appointed Leadership Apps - round 2 due Nov 18! Now that you've all Reggo-ed for our remaining two conferences (RIGHT?), you have access to lots of exciting leadership applications - elected and appointed positions, special programs, the works. Applying for leadership is also THE BEST SHOT at your program area of choice. To see how to access apps, click here.
