Delegation Bulletin #17: Bill Boxes and Parties and no 12/18 meeting

The Holidays are here! We will *not* be meeting tonight, Wednesday, December 18, due to a high number of delegates already off on their holiday adventures. And, of course, we'll take a break for Christmas Day and New Year's Day. But never fear: there are still at least two planned meet-ups between now and the return of regular meetings on January 8. Of course, elected office candidates might want to rally the troops for sign making and planning . . . .

So here's what you need to know for the rest of 2013:

1.) Bill Boxes: We will meet at the Y&G office (2555 3rd Street, Suite 215 Sacramento CA 95818 - it's a little hard to find, it's in industrial downtown, NOT at our YMCA) at 10:00 am on Friday, December 27 to assembly bill boxes and earn our delegation $500 in grant money. It'll be fun!

2.) Holiday Alumni Mixer: On December 27, Rob and Christiana will be holding a Holiday Mixer at our house in Natomas for current and former delegates from 6-8pm. Per your request, wear your holiday best. We'll have some snacks and treats for you. Parents are welcome. The FB event is here: https://www.facebook.com/events/1435522436663908/  You can either RSVP there or by emailing Christiana. Your RSVP will get you the address. Please RSVP whether you plan to attend or not so I know you received the invitation and I know for how many people we should plan. RSVPing is polite and delegates who do it will be admired forever more.

3.) Community Service: we need to do some good. Who has project ideas? Here's one event asking for volunteers we can offer to help: http://www.italiancenter.net/pdfs/Festa%20della%20Befana.pdf However, let's here what you want to do. Bring ideas to our Bill Box day for us to chat about while we file. You should know a) the organization, b) the project, c) the date/time/duration of the opportunity, and d) how many volunteers might be needed.

4.) Sac attire: Sac Conference is a mere 8 weeks away. If you're finalizing your Christmas list or hitting those after-Christmas sales, don't forget to nab some deals on professional attire so you can be stylishly in dress code for our final conference. Sac Rack: And if you're cleaning out your closets and have Sac attire that's no longer your style or doesn't fit, set it aside to bring to Bob II's Sac Rack, a clothing exchange to help ensure everyone in the program has access to dress-code compliant professional attire.  Questions about the dress code and Sac attire - hmmm, where should you go?

5.) FLIP The folks running the Female Leaders In Power group would like you to know that if you are interested in participating you can click here to let them know. Also, if you have leadership experience, you can apply to be a mentor by clicking here. If anyone has questions about the FLIP group, you can click here.

6.) Have a happy holiday season and be smart if you're celebrating. Make good choices. Your advisors love you and want you to stay safe.

Delegation Bulletin #16: It's Festival Time!‏

Delegation Bulletin #15: Holiday Festival! Secret Santa! Fun!

1.) Volunteers STILL Needed! Parents, Delegates, Friends, Lend us your time! We're still looking for some elves to help at our Holiday Festival on December 15:  http://goo.gl/ijP1XY We need another 5 or 6 people to make sure we have coverage for the day. Don't leave us at a bare bones crew, y'all.

2.) Last week was a payment deadline for a $260 payment. If you didn't bring one, bring it to the next meeting. If you need confirmation of what you owe, let me know.

3.) FESTIVAL PROMOTION: Share the FB event: https://www.facebook.com/events/1417235968497714/

We need help this coming Sunday, December 8 at the Antique Fair http://sacantiquefaire.com/location/
I need 3-5 delegates to pass out flyers at the event from 7am to 11am. I know it's early. I also know it's important. Please help.
I need the same or another 3-5 delegates to walk midtown and ask businesses to display our flyer for our event. 11am-?
We have the vendors, we have Santa, we have a Food Truck, but if we don't have shoppers, we don't have an event. The goal is to make this our one, big fundraising event of the year. We need ALL of your help to ensure its success.  No one at our last meeting signed up to help this weekend. This is tremendously disappointing. Please step-up.

4.) Secret Santa! We will do our Secret Santa Gift Exchange and Holiday Campaign Sign Making Party at our December 11 meeting. Gifts can be up to $10 in value. Have fun with them! If you do not know who you are assigned to serve as Santa for, let me know ASAP. Everyone should have their assignment and the info on their person.

4a.) Our Wed, Dec 11 meeting will be half Holiday Party and half sign-making party. Delegates running for office who would like help making signs should bring all materials and a plan for sign-making. Remember to track your materials for financial reporting purposes.

5.) Bill Boxes: Once again this year we will be assisting the Y&G head office with assembling the boxes of the entire program's bills. It's not a hard job and we'll have fun hanging out. Please complete this form to let me know your availability for this project: http://doodle.com/bbs72kngnmr63xbv

(This is how I'll know you read the bulletin this week. Make your advisor happy by reading the bulletin and responding as requested!)

6.) Swim With Santa: Friday, December 13 - thank you to Maret, Jordyn, Sarina, and Calvin who have signed up to volunteer at Swim With Santa next Friday. Some more helpers would be great. Helpers are needed either from 5pm-7pm, 7pm-9pm, or for the whole event from 5-9pm. Dress code is holiday festive: wear a fun holiday sweater or your delegation sweatshirt and some dark pants. Volunteer tasks are: water elves (helping kids in the pool - requires one-piece swimsuit); photo helpers helping with Santa pictures; craft helpers; food helpers.  Please email me ASAP with your availability to help. This is a community service event for those of you who need hours.

Coming Up:
Dec 11: Elected/Appointed Leadership Applications Due - Must contact CD to notify her that your application needs approval!

Delegation Bulletin #13: Parents, We Need Your Help!‏

Have I mentioned yet how proud I am of all of our delegates? Great Bill Hearing Night, great conference weekend . . . this year is going so well and that's all down to each of you!

Here's what you need to know/do this week
(the alternative title of this week's bulletin could also be "Fun With Google Forms.")

1.) Please complete your Bob I survey and role preferences: http://goo.gl/pFwjAf
(As part of that process, you will need to register for Bob II: https://app.reggo.org/calymca

Also, you should have received a surveymonkey survey from the Y&G head office. Please take a moment to complete that as well.

2.) Future Leaders Campaign & YMCA Strong Kids Campaign: Each year, Y&G undertakes a massive fundraising campaign (just like we do at the delegation level). Similarly, our own Sacramento YMCA (and all YMCAs) conduct their annual fundraising campaigns. Both campaigns work much in the same way: campaigners call Y&G supporter or Y members and ask for donations. We need two volunteers for the Future Leaders Campaign and two volunteers for the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign (the same people can volunteer for both). You'll receive training on how to fundraise. Future Leaders campaigners get to go to a few special meetings during Bob II and Sac Conference. Please email Christiana ASAP if you'd like to volunteer.

3.) Speaking of volunteering! (PARENTS: This is the part where we need your help) We discussed our upcoming Holiday Festival at the last meeting.  Here's a google form to complete about volunteering for the day. ALL delegates are required to complete it. Parents, we ask you also to click through and read about the event and consider donating some of your time. We need to line up approximately 25 volunteers to be on-hand at all times during the day (which means more than 25 people as we'll have some shifts of volunteers scheduled). Click here to complete the form:
http://goo.gl/ijP1XY

4.) Historian needed! Alberto would like us to elect/select a delegation historian. Responsibilities include documenting our events with pictures and helping us create a Delegation newsletter quarterly. Those interested should come to the next meeting prepare to give a short speech about their qualifications.

5.) Causes.com fundraiser: once again this year, we'll be conducting a fundraising push through causes.com. This online platform sends contributions directly to our YMCA. Donating is fast and easy and secure. Donations can range from a minimum of $10 to ???? Please share this link on your Facebook page or via email to friends and family.  Proceeds will help us meet remaining need this year, seed next year's scholarship fund (yes, already!), and also support the reestablishment of our sister program for middle-schoolers, the Model United Nations.

Last year, we raised $1005, this year, we want to continue on to the $2000 mark!

Parents, we ask you to share the link as well.

Delegation Bulletin #12: Bill Hearing Night - meet at 5:30pm

Bill Hearing Night is tomorrow! We've moved up our meeting time to allow groups to fine-tune their presentations and practice before our 6:30 start time. We meet AT CITY HALL. Don't come to the Y, you'll be very lonely.

You've all done a great job - time to show off your research. Here are some last minute reminders.

Bill Hearing Night
1.) Timing is everything and practice makes awesome!
Practice your sponsor speeches and arguments to make sure you don't go over your time limit. The procedure and time limits are listed below. Also, film your practice or ask a parent or friend to watch. Ask them to help you cut down on the "ums" or "likes."  And practice your power posing! Stand tall, stand still, speak out - you know your stuff, don't be shy!

2.) How do you yield your time?
You have several options on how to answer that question when you're done speaking.
"I yield my time to the chair" - when you're done speaking and don't want anyone to ask you questions.
"I yield my time to questions" - when you want to encourage interaction and welcome questions
"I yield my time to the author sponsor/summation speech" - if you're a sponsor or lobbyist and want to give yourself more time for the big finish.

3.) Two-part questions?
If you want to ask someone a two-part question, start by saying "does the speaker yield to a two part question."

4.) Audience prep
If your parents are coming, or any other guests, encourage them now to be active, ask questions, and participate. Bill Hearing Night is the most fun when there is a lot of back-and-forth. And it has the added benefit of making your bill stronger.

Training & Elections Conference IA.) Buses depart at 3:45 on Saturday morning. Be safe and arrive at 3:30am. Don't take chances - it is a LONG drive.  Robbie will be there to check you in. Rob and Christiana will see you at Camp Roberts. You'll get your sweatshirts when you arrive.
B.) Bring a highlighter and spend some time looking over the schedule when you receive it. Ask a returner or advisor if you need help interpreting the schedule. Remember, except for social events, no activity on the schedule is optional. Be where the schedule tells you to be - always!
C.) If you want to, download the Groupme app and familiarize yourself with it before we go. If you're not receiving groupme texts, email Christiana with your cell number. We'll use groupme to stay in contact and provide updates during the conference. Please do not use groupme (or your phones) during sessions. Be respectful. Phones should be off and away during sessions.
D.) PACK LIGHT: there's a potential that you'll be lugging your luggage quite a distance this year. In case you are, make sure you can carry your belongings! pillow/sleeping bag/clothes for 2.5 days. That's all you need.
E.) PACK LAYERS: it's going to be around 70 degrees between the hours of 10am and 4pm. Once that sun dips and before it comes up, expect temps between 50 degrees and the freezing mark. Hats. Gloves. Scarves. A COAT. Pack 'em. It's going to be colder than you think.
F.) Pocket money: we'll stop for breakfast on the way down and lunch on the way back (fast food, nothing fancy). That's all the money you'll need. Many delegations, however, sell items (tshirts, food, etc) to raise money during the conferences. Bring extra money if you'll want to buy any of that stuff.
H.) Button Sales! We've gone over this 0%, but we have buttons we're selling to raise money for ourselves. I need sales people to volunteer to walk around at meal times and free times to sell buttons. Easy job. Make friends. Shake hands. Good times! Max will be the ring leader on Sunday, but I need a Saturday leader, too.

Delegation Bulletin #9: Bill Time

We're back to our regularly scheduled meeting time/location tomorrow - 6pm in the Board Room. Now that it's getting darker earlier (and in case the weather ever cools down and/or rains), everyone should use the V Street entrance rather than entering through the upper Y building and going through the field in the dark. The street address for that building is 1926 V Street. It is just east of the train tracks, between 19th and 21st Street.

We're all bill work, all the time until Bill Hearing Night on November 6.

Bill Sponsors and their groups should be able to complete this information at the end of this email by the time they arrive at the meeting tomorrow (or darn close!)

Calendar:
October 23: Regular Meeting - Bill Drafts & Supporting Materials due
October 30: Practice Bill Hearing Night (Mandatory); Conference preparation
November 6: BILL HEARING NIGHT! (At Sacramento City Hall; MANDATORY)
November 9-11: Training & Elections Conference I!

1.) What problem does your bill seek to solve and how?
2.) In which California state code would your bill live? Which section?
3.) To solve the problem, does your bill need to ADD a new section or does it need to AMEND, or REPEAL existing law?

By Wednesday, October 23, you should have a full draft of your bill and at least two sources of research FOR your bill and two sources AGAINST it.

By Wednesday, November 6, your bill will be about 90% complete for Bill Hearing Night.

The Kids Are Y Tasting & Benefit Auction - Volunteer EventFriday, October 18 will be the benefit Auction at the Masonic Temple Ballroom - located on J Street at 12st in downtown Sac. Another Volunteer Event:
We need some volunteers to help pass out Holiday Festival fliers next Saturday, October 19 at the Midtown Craft Fair. We'll take sign-ups at this week's meeting.

Meeting Attendance Reminder:

f you're going to be late or absent, you need to contact Alberto BEFORE 6pm to let him know!  Late fees are $1/minute towards the Pizza Fund for those who fail to call. :)

Delegation Bulletin 6.5 - Reminders and A Schedule Change‏

We're meeting tomorrow night! See you all promptly at 6pm in our usual meeting location. (Don't come hungry - we didn't get full participation on our survey - sadness!)

First, Do this, right now, if you haven't yet: http://goo.gl/o8y6qk

Here's what you need to know/do/remember:

1.) MIXED BAG SALES EXTENDED 1 WEEK! Mixed Bag orders were due tomorrow, but we're giving you one more week to sell, sell, sell!

2.) Bill Ideas: please come prepared to talk about bill ideas tomorrow. Remember, www.rtumble.com is a great source of news about California policy and problems - but there are many other sources out there as well - some of which could be found through chats at school or around your dinner table. (Note: solving the Federal Government Shut-Down is probably not a great bill topic since its federal and we're more concerned with state problems.)

3.) Fundraising Letter Drafts Due: If you are interested in pursuing this idea, bring your drafts tomorrow for review. Hopefully, a few people have already proofread them for you. (For info on the process, check out this link: http://saccentraldelegation.blogspot.com/2011/10/y-bulletin-3-letter-writing-and-more.html

4.) Sweatshirt Designs: Bring 'em tomorrow! Check out the FB group for a few ideas Ariel created or to upload your own!

5.) PAYMENTS DUE: By tomorrow, you should have submitted a total of $360 in payments so far. If you applied for Y-Assist, you should have received notification from Mia of your new payment amount. Let me know if you applied but haven't heard from Mia yet.

6.) SCHEDULE CHANGE: Grab your planners - we're mixing it up. Here's your October schedule, it includes some changed dates for meetings:
October 2: Regular Meeting (Bill Ideas, Sweatshirt design, Appointed/Elected Positions)
October 9: Regular Meeting (Bill Ideas; Break into groups; Campaign discussions; Concession sales plans; Bill Hearing Night invites)
October 12 (Saturday): Bill Boot Camp @ The Y - 9am to 1pm (Bill Development & Writing)
October 16: NO Regular Meeting (Bill groups encouraged to use this time to meet)
October 18: MANDATORY Volunteer activity at "The Kids Are Y Tasting & Benefit Auction," Masonic Temple Ballroom, downtown Sac.
October 23: Regular Meeting - Bill Drafts due
October 30: Practice Bill Hearing Night (Mandatory)
November 6: BILL HEARING NIGHT!

7.) Wanna run for office? Wanna apply for a leadership position: review this links and come prepared to discuss your plans!

Delegation Bulletin #6: The No-Meeting Edition

Here’s what you need to know this week – it’s a little long, but it’s valuable! I’m even going to tell you right up front that there are two reading tests in here, so, keep an eye out for them! (hint hint, siren sound, red light, flashing neon)

1)  No regular meeting on Wednesday!

2) I’m expecting to see Rose, Maret, Jordyn, Chloe, Holly, Bailey, Ariel, Shyanne, Tony, and Calvin on the bus to Baby Bob on Friday. If you need a packing list, it's available at the "Forms" section at the blog. Key items: sleeping bag, WARM CLOTHES, and a flashlight (that's not your cell phone). If for any reason you are unable to attend you need to call Christiana directly to tell her.

Please be at the Sac YMCA at 4:30 on Friday for departure. (We will also be stopping in El Dorado Hills at Oak Ridge High to pick up our sister delegation and continuing on from there)

We will depart Bear Valley at 11am on Sunday and expect to be back at the YMCA by 1pm.

3) Mixed Bags Sales continue! You have until October 2 to sell all that you can! Remember, you do *not* need to collect sales tax because it is included in the listed price of each item. Nearly 50% of each item you sell will be credited towards your program fees.

4) You have a wee bit of homework this week to prepare for our next regular meeting on October 2:

- Bill ideas: remember when we talked about where bill ideas come from? Take a moment each day to check out the headlines in the paper. Try Rough & Tumble – rtumble.com – a great run down of what’s big news in California each day. Think about challenges that might be facing your neighborhood or your school. What would you like to see changed? Bring an idea with you to the October 2 meeting.

- Fundraising letters: If you’re interested in trying your hand at a personal fundraising letter, bring your first draft to the meeting on October 2. Remember: your letter should be proofread by at least two people and needs to be approved by Christiana before you mail it out! (Click here for fundraising letter tips: http://saccentraldelegation.blogspot.com/2011/10/y-bulletin-3-letter-writing-and-more.html#more)

- We’ll spend a few more minutes discussing elected and appointed leadership opportunities. Check out this list of options available to you and if you’re considering a run or applying, come ready to talk about your plans! Elected leadership info is here : http://calymca.org/programs/model-legislature-court/advisor-manual/elected-leadership/  Appointed leadership info is here: http://calymca.org/programs/model-legislature-court/advisor-manual/mlc-appointed-leadership/

- Still reading? Reply to this email with “Of course I’m still reading” so I know.

5) Sweatshirt design ideas are due on October 2 too! You can submit them early and I’ll post them to the blog and FB group (or you can post to FB yourself) .

6) By October 2, everyone should have submitted $360 in total payments. The next $260 payment is due by October 12 (so by October 12, you should have submitted $620 in total payments) (If you have applied for Y-Assist you should be finding out your award and amended payment plan soon – so be on the lookout for that information.)

7) Bill Boot Camp is coming! What’s Bill Bootcamp? A special Saturday meeting during which we knock out most of the bill writing process. We’ll walk you through research and drafting. And there will be pizza. Maybe a movie. It’ll be fun, you’ll like it. This year’s Bill Boot Camp is planned for Saturday, October 12. If you are unable to attend that day, let me know ASAP, otherwise, we’ll expect to see you. Boot Camp is expected to run from 9 to 1 (with optional movie after).

8) One more survey document! Yes, you’ve submitted some of this info to us already. But do your data-entry-weary advisors a favor and just type it into this form so it organizes itself. We’ll be so grateful that if we get 100% participation before FRIDAY, September 27, we’ll buy y’all dinner for the October 2 meeting. We expect it will take you about 5-10 minutes to complete. Piece of cake, right? Click here: http://goo.gl/o8y6qk

Upcoming Events:
Oct 2: Mixed Bags sales due
October 9: Payment due date
Oct 18: The Kids Are Y Tasting & Benefit Auction

Delegation Bulletin #3: Getting Down To Business

Thank you to all of the parents and new delegates who attended our Parents' Night. We hope you found answers to all of your questions. If not, let us know!

We still have room for new delegates, so grab those friends you've been meaning to bring along, and come on down. The sooner you join, the more fun you have.

This week, we'll get down to business as we discuss current events and bill ideas, along with the elected and appointed leadership posts that give you a chance to step-up to leadership.

Most Important Thing This Week:
We want to make you official, but we can't without your registration forms and your initial $100 payment. If you haven't submitted your forms, please bring them next week. If you need to print a copy, click here. Or, bring a parent to the meeting and fill out everything on Wednesday!

If the initial $100 payment presents a challenge and/or you need to apply for financial aid, make sure to submit that application along with your registration material. Applications must be submitted with supporting documentation or they cannot be considered. If the initial $100 presents a challenge, please bring what you can - $50, $20? - and discuss with an advisor or with Mia.  Application is available at the same link.

Why is this especially important this week? Because we potentially will have some delegation decisions on which to vote and only registered delegates will likely be eligible. Final eligibility determination will be decided by your delegation president. Don't miss your chance to make your voice count!

Reminders:
1) Think about those sweatshirt ideas! Designs will be due on September 18!
2) The deadline to register for our Fall Leadership Retreat at Bear Valley Y Camp is this week. The cost to attend is $60 and covers transportation, lodging, meals, and a t-shirt. Don't miss it!

Upcoming Events

Sept 11: Fall Retreat Payment Deadline
Sept 18-Oct 2: Mixed Bags fundraising sale
Oct 18: The Kids Are Y Tasting & Benefit Auction

Happy Labor Day Weekend!

With two great meetings down, and plenty more to go, this week will see our annual Parents' Night & Info Session, Wednesday, September 4, at 6pm at the YMCA (2021 W Street). New delegates have had a taste of the program so far and learned about parliamentary procedure.  This week, we'll answer all of your - and your parents - questions about the program, our policy, this year's calendar, and our fundraising program this year.

There will be s'mores! Your payment secures your spot and is due by Sept 11.
3) Paperwork: if you haven't submitted your registration paperwork and initial $100 payment, please do so this week. Missing forms? See the link at the bottom of this email.

Mixed Bag catalogs will be available. Mixed Bag sales are open to those participating in Spring Conference or who will be returning next year. Sales will be credited to individual sellers (though the option to donate proceeds to the group scholarship fund is always available!). Mixed Bag orders and money will be due at our March 13 meeting. That gives you one week to get your sale on if you don't have a catalog already! (If you want to get selling sooner, additional catalogs can be picked up from Ashley at the Y.)

For those with catalogs already, remember that checks should be made payable to "Sacramento YMCA," and you do not need to calculate sales tax, it is included in the price of the bags.

See you Wednesday, March 6 at 6:30pm at the Sacramento YMCA!

Spring Conference Bulletin #1

As you know, the event will be held Friday, April 5 - Sunday, April 7, 2013 in Corcoran, CA (down by Tulare). The Y down there is apparently super awesome, has a swimming pool, and a water slide. And you get to wear flip-flops, not Sac attire. Wohoo for casual conferences!

Program Areas: This conference is a super-mini ML/C - well, ML, there's no C at this one. There are three program areas: Senate, Assembly, and NIC. There are also additional leadership opportunities just for this conference. You can run for/apply for:

- Speaker of the Assembly
- Lieutenant Governor
- NIC Presiding Commissioner (3 slots)
- Committee Chair (multiple available for both legislative houses and NIC)

In our meetings we'll author another piece of legislation as well as one or more NIC proposals to take to Spring Conference. This will give new delegates exposure to what we do during the fall and give returning delegates a chance to delve even deeper into policy proposals and parliamentary procedure.

Another difference with Spring Conference is that everyone has, basically, the same sessions at the same time, AND the same free time - much of which apparently gets spent pool-side.

Accommodations: We will be camping on the lawn in tents. But it won't be cold. It won't be an animal barn. And there will be shower facilities - so not like that thing we almost did with Larry ;)

Travel: I misspoke about this conference earlier - you will miss school on Friday, April 5 because we are taking the train and we need to be in Corcoran by 5pm. Most likely, we'll be taking a bus from Sac to Stockton at about 10am and then a train from Stockton to Corcoran, arriving there at about 3pm. The train station is about 3/4 of a mile from the Corcoran YMCA, so we'll be walking (and finding a ride for your luggage).

Fun stuff: There's a pool and a water slide - did I mention? There were also be a dance, snack time, and a Campfire-style friendship gathering. This conference is MUCH smaller than the one you just completed but it's a great opportunity to meet new people and get to know your program friends better. It's also a great opportunity to network for those of you seeking elected or appointed roles next year.

There are Facebook events made for both Spring Conference Meetings and Spring Conference itself. Please invite your friends and share on your walls: http://www.facebook.com/SacramentoCentralDelegation/events  Attached to this email is a Spring Conference schedule from 2011 just to give you an idea for what the weekend might look like.
