El Dorado Youth and Government Delegation Bulletin #17

When something is important enough, you do it even if the odds are not in your favor."

-Elon Musk

This will be the last regular bulletin of 2018, however we still encourage you to check your email over the break for any news that may arise before we return to regular meetings in January. The weekly bulletin will resume on January 4.

Happy Holidays to all! Your advising team wishes you a safe and happy winter break and a joyous New Year! Make good choices and finish out 2018 living your values for all to see!

1.) Meeting Schedule: We have no more regular meetings in 2018 (we don't meet on Dec 20, 27, or Jan 3). We have shockingly few meetings left, so make sure they, and our conferences, are on your calendar:
  • January 10 - regular meetings resume
  • January 17 - mandatory pre-conference meeting
  • January 19-21 - Training & Elections Conference II (Fresno)
  • January 24 - regular meeting
  • January 31 - regular meeting (delegation officer primary)
  • February 7 - mandatory pre-conference meeting for ALL delegates and a family member (new and returning).
  • February 14-18 - 71st Model Legislature & Court (Sacramento)

2.) National Judicial Competition Apps Due in Reggo by Dec 20: The National Judicial Competition (NJC) is a nationwide YMCA Appellate Court and Mock Trial competition program, taking place in Chicago, IL each summer and is hosted by the YMCA of the USA in partnership with the American Bar Association. Interested delegates should complete the application available in Reggo now and tell Derek no later than Dec 20 for approval. This program brings together Y&G court participants from around the country to face off in mock trial and appellate court competitions. The conference takes place between approximately July 25 and August 2, 2019.

REMINDERS:

Conference Attendance: We have two remaining conferences this year. Please review our conference attendance policy:
  • For T&EII (Jan 19-21): Partial attendance is not permitted except in extraordinary circumstances. Regular season sport events, meets, regular season academic club meets, finals, school projects, etc, are not extraordinary circumstances. You are expected to travel to the conference with the delegation, attend the entire conference, and travel home again with the delegation.
  • For ML/C ("Sac Conference," Feb 14-18): Partial attendance is not permitted
Your advisor team is managing the safety of 140 people, coalition wide. It makes things more complicated for us and potentially less safe for you if we need to manage different travel schedules for different delegates.

Check the website first: In addition to our bulletin, a lot of valuable information can be found at our website. Here, you'll find all past bulletinsdelegation information, a program calendar, and a link to our forms and downloads folder. Remember to check the site first - chances are you'll find answers to most of your questions.

As always, thank you for reading and I will see you in 2019!

Parent Corner

- Looking Ahead: Our next conference runs from Saturday, January 19 through Monday, January 21. We will likely depart from the YMCA around 9am on Saturday and return around 3pm on Monday. Our final conference, the full Model Legislature & Court, runs from Thursday, February 14 through Monday, February 18. Unlike our Fresno trips, because the final conference is here in Sacramento, parents must provide transportation to and from the downtown Sacramento area. Plan for Thursday arrival around 10am and Monday pick-up around 9am. Our February 6 pre-MLC meeting will be mandatory for all delegates and a member of each delegate's family. Please make plans to attend!

Sac Rack Donation Time! Each year, Y&G collects new or gently used professional attire for our "Sac Rack" event at the January Conference. We create a pop-up professional attire boutique at the Fresno Convention Center to help delegates prepare for the February Model Legislature & Court. All delegates are able to shop. Vouchers are provided for delegates who need them.
  • You can help by bringing donations to the YMCA between now and January 18. Here is a flyer you can share with your friends, coworkers, etc, to encourage them to donate as well! If you'd like a customized flyer to post at your place of work, we're happy to provide you with one. Email details to Christiana.
YMCA175- London If you haven't yet, please take a moment to complete this parent survey on an exciting possible opportunity for our delegates!
